What is a "Wanfo Wall"

A Wanfo Wall refers to small niches used for enshrining Buddha statues, deity statues, or memorial tablets. It is named "Wanfo Wall" (literally "Wall of Ten Thousand Buddhas") because it consists of numerous small niches. Depending on the size and purpose of the enshrined objects, it may also be called a "Wanfo Wall Light" (万佛墙光明灯), "Wanfo Memorial Tablet Wall" (万佛牌位墙), or "Cremation Niche Wall" (骨灰存放架万佛墙). Regardless of its specific form, the defining feature of a Wanfo Wall is its intricate carvings of Buddhas, deities, and other divine figures. Through the blessings of monks' consecration rituals, these niches are believed to be protected by the power of the Buddhas and deities. Devotees who worship here can have their prayers fulfilled, hardships alleviated, and deceased loved ones blessed in the afterlife, ensuring eternal prosperity, longevity, and happiness for their descendants.

The Significance of Worshipping at a Wanfo Wall

The purpose of establishing a Wanfo Wall in temples is clear, but we will focus on the spiritual benefits for devotees who worship here. Drawing from the Sutra on the Karmic Differences of Beings as Explained by the Buddha to the Elder Sakyaputta, the ten benefits of worshipping at a Wanfo Wall are:

1. 1.Lighting the World Like a Lamp: Worshippers will be like a lamp illuminating the world in all their future lives, becoming noble leaders among humans, just like the Buddha, whose wisdom lights up the entire world.

2. 2.Unimpaired Vision: Worshippers will have clear vision and will not suffer from blindness or myopia.

3. 3.Attainment of Divine Vision: Worshippers will acquire the divine eye (one of the five supernatural faculties).

4. 4.Discernment of Good and Evil: Worshippers will be able to distinguish between good and evil deeds and understand the principles of karma.

5. 5.Elimination of Darkness: Worshippers will possess superior wisdom to dispel all ignorance and darkness in themselves and others.

6. 6.Enlightened Intelligence: Worshippers will have wisdom that surpasses ordinary people, free from worldly temptations, and the ability to discern right from wrong.

7. 7.Avoidance of Darkness: Worshippers will never be reborn in places of heresy or darkness but will reside in enlightened and auspicious realms.

8. 8.Great Merit: Worshippers will be reborn as beings with great merit.

9. 9.Rebirth in Heaven: Worshippers will not fall into evil realms after death but will be reborn in heavenly realms.

10. 10.Quick Attainment of Nirvana: Worshippers will quickly achieve the state of enlightenment (Nirvana).
